Many Heat Exchanges and directly cooled Engines have Zinc or Soft Iron sacrificial anodes screwed into their casings. The combination of different metals in the system that is copper and steel form galvanic cells in the cooler and pipe work. Pencil anodes are designed in various sizes to protect a certain distance and surface area. These can be replaced by removing an external plug. Employing and regularly maintaining pencil anodes will give a longer life and help to prevent failure of pipes and tube stacks in heat exchanges.
